Gday!!

Haven't made a post in quite awhile, been travelling, seeing the world and not making much music of mix tapes wince leaving van city.. The wonderful world of Van city.. Was such a beautiful time there Working, playing and hanging with my friends I made whilst spending three amazing years!!

Back in Sydney now and ready to take on the many challenges coming in 2012.

So I started getting into the production side of my music and found myself always veering into making Deep, Ambiant Electronic stuff.. I guess it was the easiest thing to make, simple build ups, easy chord progression and lovely melodic rythyms.
I tried to promote it soft on SOUNDCLOUD and FACEBOOK while in Vancouver though didn't really get a lot of feedback.

Called the collection ' FAR FROM HOME ' because for the year I was producing the songs I felt quite far from it all..

Well it has been three years and the time has come for me to leave Vancouver for some well overdue Travel adventures...

Honduras and South East Asia are calling me, so for three months I am going to evaluate my life, do lots of reading, shagging, writing and listen to some really great music.. I am almost at the point where I don't even know what music I like..

But don't worry... My friends I have made and have had the privilege of having in my life, I wont be gone for long, I am certainly coming back for the majestic Vancouver summer.. Simply because it is the most beautiful place to be during those months and I wish to party...

I was worried about losing all my gigs while away, I was worrying a lot. Almost to the point were I wasnt going to leave at all.. I became so attached to them.. Kinda felt like, " All this hard work I have put into my gigs through, networking, social media exploitation, friendships made at the venues... They will be gone... Some other cat whose waiting for his/her chance to rock the decks will take the gig and so be it"...

But I came to my senses with some help from my good friends who are true (because they don't want to see me fail)..It was.. Who cares if I lose the gigs to someone else, life is about exploring your potential.. Life is about making mistakes and learning from them..

I know for a fact that the grass is always going to be greener.. If I saw what I am achieving now 3 years ago when I was a Wallpaperer here in Van city, I would have fell over and cried out!! " Yes"!! Thats what I want!!!

But even now, I honestly want more outta my life..

I always underestimate my talent, and I am my own biggest critic.. I take my shit way to seriously and always trying to improve..

I know for a fact that with that attitude in mind, I cannot fail.. And when I return, I expect to be looked after.

Thanks to Bruce(ELdjloco), DJ Leanne, Jess Norsworthy,Brandon Chalmers, James Kang, Dana D, Boo, Will Wing, Ch3rk, Dom (Ecos), Mesh ent, DHM pub group and anyone else who have helped me create my current DJ status in this city...

To those who didnt help whom I asked either for a chance or for a gig.. Maybe we can work together in the future..

THE TRUTH:

I had a really interesting conversation with a bar manager last night about why he is one of the most sought after managers in the DHM group.. One key point he mentioned which stuck with me was that he has the biggest, " GUEST LIST ".. And that all the places he has worked he has always brought a crowd in..

Since I have started Djn in this city one of my biggest let downs, or should I say blocks which has stopped me from getting a shot in this city has always been the good old question, " How many people can you bring down"?

I have always had a problem with this question.. " Should it matter? Last time I checked it said DJ on my business card, not promoter"..

Look, to all the people out there whose opinions are like, "so what, it is what it is and if you can't get people down then too bad, you lose".. Well good luck too ya.. Seriously because I know for a fact that there are some what you might think are losers out there that have huge potential to bring people down to there new spots..... Its just not going to happen overnight champ!!!

The truth is I think judging a DJ's sucess off of their guestlists is bullshit..

In my defense, Im going to use my SAT night residency as an example.

It is full every weekend, with many of the same faces might I add who bring 3-5 of their friends.. Music is consistenly good, ranging from Hip-Hop/R&B, Dance, ELectro and yes of course some T40..

My guest list is maybe 3-4 people..

I was told that my night is the most successful of nights with Dj's and that the place has the best vibe and the staff are always stoked...

Not once have I been questioned about why my GL is empty? Not once.. But.. I bet if it were empty, and if I was playing House music, or Indie stuff I would be questioned about why there is no one there.. Or that I should consider changing the music.. Or maybe I would just be fired and then replaced..

The truth.. Well its about consistency.. Being consistent with your spins, and not being a Darche fag and only playing specif genres.. ( This goes for the Pub Culture in this city mind you, mainly with the DHM group)..

Be consistent with your regular clientel and customer base, get to know them, ask em what they like, buy them a drink and invite them back..

Super easy... yeah?? ;)

Which brings me to my question? Who is the most expensive, sought after DJ in this city, and what got them there?? How big are their guest lists? Because fuck that if Im going to wait another 10 years, balding and completely frazzeled out to become hugely successful in this game!!

Did corporate/commercial radio kill the mysteriousness of clubbing and pub culture?

DId the Music become to easy to purchase/steal, so then everyone started asking for it more free willingly?

Is Digital Music/Dj software to blame??

Wow times change, and for the most part... Im stoked.. We live in a beautiful world, I am totally going to embrace it..

Hows it going everybody,

This is yet another Blog of mine regarding yet another experience I encountered once again in the dj life, here in Vancouver BC..

But I would first like to say this...

For the most part... this life of dj'n as a career is a blessing. A true experience that i feel privileged for having..

When I was working 5 days a week in the day job constantly tired, plus working 3 nights a week I was worn out and in some sort of depression I had no idea about.. For the most part this was ruining my every existence and I was yet again creating a nice rut to cave myself in.. Though since quitting my day job and focusing on my dj'n and health, it has opened the doors for more positive thinking, exercise, healthy living and cherishing my friendships..

If somehow you find the following words offensive, please note that its just an opinion of mine and i have no intention to offend or disrespect anyone..

Now that cheesey part is over I am going to get to my recent issue with people having no Idea about respecting the dj's space, effort and in period.... JOB

( During this report you'll see numbers those or scenarios I've been in recently ).

I mean come on.. The girls, Booze, constant attention, Constant flow of new music, making new friends, fun gadgetry and electrical instruments of some kind, being completely idolized by the world as someone of complete significance and importance. Those are the reasons why i signed up for the Dj'n thing right??

Yeah maybe when I was 18 when I started dj'n but most certainly not now.. I mean it is still fucking cool to play with Turntables, cdj's and the midi Controllers but for the most part... THE ROMANCE HAS GONE!!!!

And Romance is so very important in a relationship!!

Would that 6'2 chick in the white Tank top and ripped jeans, slowly crawling her way over to me so awkwardly drunk and uncomposed care if i were using my record collection to DJ with?

When she makes her retarded request for some song that is completely off the musical mood of the moment should my reaction be one of complete admiration? Something like, " WOW.. Holy shit, you my friend have just requested the best song ever, ( Alarms going off in the background of the club) you are truly an inspiration girl!! And thank you for being so smart and taking the time to come and request it"..

in all honesty this really happened.. Not the part about me praising her but the request part.. I DJ 4 times a week, in 4 different locations.. And each one brings me such a range of different requests..

1) " Do you have the song, " Slush Knuckels By Kronic Substance?"..... Now, I have never heard of this song.. Obviously, ( Imagine it really exists ).. My reply to this request was, " Hmmmm. Sorry never heard of it, unfortunately I can't help you". ( I then nod my head, smile and get back to Beat matching the cue'd song I have ready to drop).. I then get a 'TAP' on my shoulder, its the same girl, " WHY NOT"?!?!?! ( " You don't know that song? Are you serious!!!??"

*** YES IM FUCKING SERIOUS.. I DONT KNOW IT.. I DONT WANNA KNOW IT RIGHT NOW, BUT IF I COME ACROSS IT IN MY EVER SEARCHING ENDEAVOR FOR DANCE FLOOR FILLERS I WILL CERTAINLY CONSIDER PLAYING IT.. BUT FOR NOW GO AWAY, GET A DRINK, MAKE A FRIEND AND IF MY MUSIC IS NOT TO YOUR LIKING PLEASE KINDLY LEAVE AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! ***

Now after reading my capitalized above text, do I come across as a general Douche? Am I being a fuckwit? Am I asking too much of people?

I can understand and respect people wanting to come request a song from the DJ... In this continent anyway (from what i remember in Australia requests were non existent generally, though I have been away from that continent for over 2 years).. I now try not to take myself so seriously and look upon these strangers as potential friends who love music and want to share there taste with mine.. But for fucks sake, do not lecture me on why I should have this specific song or why I should be playing it..

Recently i had a women come up to me at the metropole ( A pub downtown with a dance floor ( packed for the most part ) that we mostly play hip-hop and classic rap in ) who stood right next to me waiting for my attention.. Obviously I was immersed in my beat matching, phasing and transitions between tracks because i was playing some Hip-hop... Anyway, I finally dropped my track and popped my headphones around my neck and gave her my attention.. she said, " I want to know what song your playing next?".. " What? huh?? "... " Tell me what your playing next", she said.. I continued with my confused/Puzzled face and slowly turned away and started browsing my collection of tunes, I mean thats what i was going to do.. I finally came across a track I wanted to play, it had been a few minutes and she was still standing there.. " Im going to play some 2 pac..".. " No.. Don't play that", she said... " Excuse me"?? " I want to hear some trance music, play some trance music because I think the club will like it and if you do, and I like it I'll introduce you to some of my friends who organize Raves, get you some dj gigs.."

Now, can I just mention here that she didn't have a genuine look about her, this wasn't a piss taking opportunity for her, she wasn't joking, nor was this chick fun, happy or pleasant to talk to.. She did not introduce herself, nor compliment me on my Dj'n ability or how busy the Night is.. ( at this stage the dance floor was packed and the pub was at capacity ).

I leaned over and asked her to give me her attention...

" No sorry, but why would I play Trance?" I said... " Haven't you heard the music we've been playing for the last two hours or so?" " Sorry love, But I'm not a trance Dj and unfortunately you've stumbled into a Pub in Gastown..."

After saying this to her, she pulled away, with a confused look on her face, like I had just Farted or something and walked away, probably pissed off and angry at me...

At this stage I was quite frustrated with her..

So next thing I know hear is this Paul Van 'DYKE' walking up to me with a stern face,harsh walk and angry posture.... I'm like, " Oh shit, fuck this bitch!".. She grab's my attention after 'Tapping' my shoulder probably like 5 times... " HEY! Just play the trance"... She shouted at me, it hurt my ear... " Could you please not yell in my ear please??" this truly pissed her off and from what i saw she stormed away and never came back..

**** IF YOU DONT LIKE THE MUSIC THATS PLAYING KINDLY LEAVE AND OR REQUEST ADVICE FORM US WHERE IS A GOOD PLACE AROUND TOWN FOR THE SPECIFIC GENRE OF MUSIC YOU WANT TO HEAR.. I AGREE THAT ITS A PUB AND THAT WE (DJS) ARE NOW SOMEHOW TURNING INTO HUMAN JUKEBOXES (What I like to call, pathetic emotional skin bag Jukeboxes) AND ARE ASKED AND WILLING TO PLAY A RANGE OF DIFFERENT GENRES, BUT TRANCE!?!?! COME ON!!!! ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS... GO POP ANOTHER MDMA CAP AND GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK.. ****

In my opinion the above two scenarios happened in one weekend.. The above two and several other Request situation sent me over the top.. I was frustrated, angry, confused and disappointed in myself..

After speaking with a couple friends about this and really letting go of my ego and stubborn defenses I accepted what I now am truly going to follow in these situations.

JOE - Stop taking yourself so seriously... its a fucking pub, let morons come up to you and request songs, if you do or don't play the songs, who gives a shit... Just chill out and take the money and run..

JOE - Grab two little books with blank pages and put them at each side of the booth.. let the people write there requests in it..

There is no doubt in my mind that I sold out on the original idea of Dj'n my specific Genre of house/Breaks music.. I let that go for constant residencies in venues that are generally setup for party Rock music loving People.. And believe me I can do this well, but I would never get away with playing strictly House/breaks all night.. not hear...

The money is great, the lifestyle is Easy and I can truly say I love not having a Day job..

So in finishing I would like to leave you with this request that was made by a girl the other week at my Wednesday night residency...

1) Being the matured Dj who is experienced and knowledgeable and wise with world travel and music knowledge with a minimal amount of friends and the other..

2) Being the young inexperienced youth with many a friend on face book, very little music knowledge and getting weekly gigs due to bringing a following/a crowd.

I pretty much asked the question who should get the gigs?

The response I got from this report was great with mixed opinions. It showed that other than issues being at hand in the industry, at least people are conscious of the problems we face as Dj's.

This report is more based on the level of quality and lack of care I've witnessed and experienced in some instances of Party Promotion and also touches on how the scene is changing so drastically and effecting the peoples appreciation for quality music and also changing the cities social behavior.

Some months back I found myself hanging with some friends, chilling and drinking in the west end with every intention to go support a couple of fellow Dj's who were playing at a specific Venue in the Gastown area. My friends had not heard of or met either of the Dj's playing but I invited them along to join me, in support of my other acquaintances (the Dj's) whom had put a lot of time and energy into promoting themselves and more specifically the night.

Of course being Vancouver is was a cold, rainy and windy evening.

The information I was given was, " If I wish to receive free entry on the ticket I was given I would have to be at the Club before 11pm to avoid paying."

We rushed to make it there on time as my friends were not really interested in paying for Dj's they weren't specifically interested in seeing..

By the time we got to the venue it was ram packed out the front, it looked busy, I was quite impressed and stoked for a solid turnout.

At this stage it was pouring down with rain, and neither my friends or myself were ready to stand in the rain waiting for the door men to let us in. The club owners/party promoters had 1 small tent set up to stop people from getting wet and that's it. I found this rather irritating and myself and friends decided to leave the event an go to a pub up the street.
Simply put, what's with rushing people down there at 11pm or before to only have them stand out in the rain? Oh, " My bad, I didn't 't bring an umbrella".. Fuck that, who wants to go out at 11pm generally anyway? Fair enough if someone rocks up to an event after midnight or some shit, and then has to pay a door charge I understand. Though an amateur event based on new comer Dj's whole have been Dj's for two minuets is a different story.

This really pisses me off.. I mean, why concentrate so much on the following two things. 1) Money 2) Reputation when the most important things are staring you in the face.. 1) The people 2) The culture..

Isn't it more important to look after the people who have shown up to support the talent by maybe considering extra comforts to ensure happier club goers? Such as extra cover from the rain, or Later time for validation of tickets?

In business there is the old saying, " You have to spend money to make money". Right?? Well can't these Club owners/mangers/promoters take a loss for awhile in order to develop a culture of club goers happy with their scene and proud of there music??

Look, I totally respect the whole business side of things, really I do.. But this lack of caring about making a solid contribution to a dying scene is really starting to destroy the Electronic music culture.

I mean really what's hot right now?? Dubstep? Grime? Electro? Top 40??? More Dubstep?? ..... These are the standard genres (Besides Dubstep) that are being played in all the clubs right now because it works..

I've had people come up to me and say things like, " Fuck this city, every Dj is playing the exact same shit!!".. Well of course they are right!?!? Its because once the Dj gets the gig he wants to keep it right? So he plays what works for the club, and plays what has been working for the club? If he doesn't? Well too bad mate, we'll replace you!!
And its true, it happens..

So funny that DJ's in this city hold onto their gigs so tightly even though they are taking gross cuts on the general/standard fee Dj's should charge..

Anyway - To cut this report short let me get to the point of all this affecting the social behavior amongst the general clubbing community..

So basically people are totally saturated with invites to various different events on the two nights, lets say Friday and Saturday..

It's cold, rainy and the romance for clubbing has gone... I check Facebook and I've been invited to 10 different parties, ( Plus being a supportive friend I say Attending to 5 of those parties because a friend or acquaintance is spinning )..

Where do I go? I should really be responsible and stay home as I have work the next day but I want to hit the town, talk to some birds, get loose maybe get stoned who knows!! I'm just so torn what to do...

Generally I think people between 25-30 are broke, saving or too tired from work to find the motivation to go out to begin with, I can totally say that I fall into this category as do my closest friends sometimes...

"Fuck it", I say, I'm just going to stay home its all too hard.. LOL

There is no denying times are changing, and that more and more people are becoming involved in the Dj/entertainment industry, and I truly say, "Good luck"..

There is no doubt that we as a generation of people are not going to stop wanting to party and hopefully with the times changing as will peoples perspective on what's legitimately a great party... And I hope these people will attend the clubs/parties run by decent, fun loving passionate people who truly love music and the club scene and who want to create a safe, fun and social entertainment scene....

Please do note that anything I have written is not meant to offend those in the industry (Promoters/club managers/owners/dj's), but just points raised to address issues worth discussing.

I respect all those who have worked hard to develop a community and truly am stoked to continue to party alongside you and hope to evolve together..

So saturday is the first official launch party for the S.L.C boys new nighly called Crak'd saturdays and it is located at Funky Winker Beans @ 35 W HASTINGS ST Vancouver.

So I know what your thinking and yes it is in a grimey location but dont fret.. Once your inside the joint ain't so bad..

Me personally Im sick of all the dooshy, fake image hungry bullshit that comes with what I call comercial clubbing, this spot has a raw, underground real vibe to it and very little trouble comes to the venue.

Not to mention that beers are only $1.75 per glass and if you want a couple shooters they are $3.00 a pop..

S.L.C boys throw down all sorts of beats but gtend to go in the direction of Electro Breaks and mashups.

Harvey Cartel is the ledgend of Indie Nu Dance and Electronic while El DJ Loco can throw down party jams that make you go off..

So basically one of the worlds most famous DJs uses traktor's auto Tempo/beat matching/syncing feature to explore deeper ways to express himself as a dj..

Whats up fellow Internets,

So working in the DJ dept of one of Vancouver Cities biggest Music store can be a challenging task sometimes to say the least. With all of the perks such as, discount on Rad equipment IE.. NS7, VCI300 etc, comes also a random day where I find myself emerging into the politics of DJ and the in's and outs of the club scene this city has.

You know!! Promoters, club owners, all they want to do is make a crust at the end of the day right? Well hopefully I am wrong, and that there are a fair few promoters still out there that are doing it for the love... Anyway I find I can't help myself get into a lengthy discussion with customers who ask!!

It makes me wonder, do you have to sell out in this city to feel successful in the industry your most passionate about?

DO you have to adapt to playing a genre of music that is quite commonly known to exploit artists and the youth of today through commercial advertising and backing?

Why is it that the people in this city who pull the strings, who claim to love the music made by electronic artist can't band together and create a scene, a culture an education for the impressionable kids growing up around us.

Are breaks not fun to listen too? Is house music Boring?

Some friends of mine start these nights at nightclubs around the city, and a few have lasted no More than 4 weeks due to not enough business.

The " Nah, that didn't work, its scrapped" attitude is destroying the confidence in people to subscribe their down time to local indie promoters trying to make a change.

In my opinion Music grows, friendships are made, and people need to be given a chance to GET TO KNOW AND TRUST an event/night.

Lets tka ea DJ for example.

1) 27 y/o. 10 years experience DJ, worldly travelled, vast Electronic music knowledge, expeotiional beat matching skills and EQ knowledge, entertaining, down to earth, respectful and mature. 250 friends and fans on facebook

2) 22 Y.O. 1 year experience, fresh faced, local never travelled, Genre specific, average beat matching, no Eq experience, boring to watch, arrogant and vain.. 1000 friend and fans on facebook.

Who gets the gig in your opinion?? Mine, well its hard to say, would I sell out and go for gold with the 22 year old if I were a club owner promoter??

Anyway, business is business and starving, passionate musicians and artists will always be the same.

For those out there wanting to DJ heres a couple little tips from me personally. You can take the advise and run with it or leave it, though these are just my personal tips;

1) PRACTICE - The key is to practise at home everyday

2) Listen to mixes - Go beyond lengths to listen to fellow dj'S mix tapes and compare your styles to theirs.

3) Be kind enough and respect other established Dj's and promoters so they will listen to your own mixes, and make sure you ask for constructive critisicm rather than thew ever to famous, "Yeh its great" line...

I guess in short, it is up to the individual to make a change, and create your destiny..

If I've got the dice, I'm gonna roll em!!

Yo,

Over the last ten years my pallet for Dance music has adapted over many genres of different electronic sounds. I started my love of Djing first with Hip Hop and rap, artists such as Biggie, Pac, Daz. Warren G, Wu-Tang, and many others. Simply using two Tape decks and an amp with home speakers, at 16y/o me and buddy would roll into as house party with a big brown couch and attempt to look cool (Undercuts and all), rolling trees and flicking the track back and forth.

From here my buddy and myself experimented with what I think was a very old version of Traktor, or maybe something else, just using his computer and the mouse, learning how to beat match and mix, I would sit in his computer room for hours, mixing the same tracks over and over, striving for the perfect mix, of course no one would know being so young then back in 1998/99, stoned on the couch I would run out of the room screaming, " Did you hear that, it was sick!!".. Having said that my boys always did support.

For the next couple of years I developed a tasted for Trance, Hard Dance and hard house, anything fast.. I was going to all the raves, candy raving my way around experimenting with different sounds, I wasn't djing so much as listening to the music and enjoying the mixes. I thought I had left it all behind, thinking that music should be focused on rather than playing other peoples music.

I lived in the UK for a year and my cousin introduced me to the turntables. He would spin Old school Breaks, garage and house.. I fell for the sound instantly. The Uk was going through I big Garage and break scene around this time, and I was desperate to learn how to use these Technics 1200's.. Quickly...
He showed me as much as he could, as I would watch in awe of him, he would have friends who would throw parties with decks set up, vinyl thrown everywhere, I loved it..

I was hooked when I flew back to Sydney, my mates hadn't even heard of Breaks, Garage or speed garage, I brought them into it and it was then just becoming known around the clubs in Sydney.

Another friend of mine owned decks, he had shown me his skills, and scratching techniques which in turn led me to the massive purchase of my first Turntables.

In all honesty, when I got them home, I couldn't even set them up, I was so confused, " My girlfriend at the time figured it out and made me feel so stupid".

From that day I practiced all the time, day and night..

Buying records was a strange feeling, though I fell in love with the ritual and the scene. Any chance I could get I would throw money at the records stores, my love for breaks was increasing though House was moving in fast..

Back then I hardly saw myself 10 years down the track booking gigs.

Electronic music is my lifeblood now, my everything in terms of music, I'm currently getting into my Indie/Dance big-time and always up for a party..
